Daggett Plaza Park is Open

Good news for CCA community members in San Francisco longing for some green space: Daggett Plaza Park is now open.

Located just a block from campus, the park features lush lawns, sunny benches and other seating, and a dog park, among other amenities. The park is part of the 1010 Potrero apartment complex, and it is open to the public. Get out and enjoy the sunny weather while you can!

Adobe Will Be Our New Neighbor

Software producer Adobe Systems has signed a lease for 100 Hooper Street, a new development that will be built adjacent to CCA's San Francisco campus. The project will include construction of a permanent and affordable space for space for SFMade, which represents more than 600 San Francisco small manufacturers.

The building will be designed by Pfau Long Architecture; principal Peter Pfau has served on CCA's faculty. The building will have 314,000 square feet of office space and 86,000 square feet that will be controlled by SFMade. Manufacturers are expected to include garment makers, inventors, craftspeople, and producers of household goods such as furniture.

Construction is expected to take 18 months; a construction timeline will be forthcoming.

ARCH Art Supplies has moved . . . but not far away. You can find the store right next door at 10 Carolina. The store will re-open on August 24, and will be fully stocked for the start of classes on September 6. To find 10 Carolina, walk past the end of the road (by Larry's Towing).

In addition to all the supplies you need, you'll also find gift items and CCA swag.

New Street Parking Regulations in San Francisco

We’ve all experienced the difficulty of parking near the SF campus. Part of the problem is that spots have been taken by all-day parkers who don’t live or work in the neighborhood; they arrive early in the morning and then bike, bus, or taxi elsewhere in the city.  

 For the past four years, CCA, the Potrero Boosters, and the SF Design Center have been working together with San Francisco Municipal Transit Authority (SFMTA) to develop a better way to manage parking capacity in the area. Initially SFMTA proposed meters throughout the neighborhood, but the community pushed back. 

 You may have noticed changes in the last few weeks. Once completed, there will be two types of street parking in the area. The majority will be timed zones with a four-hour limit between the hours of 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. In addition, some of the major streets (e.g., 7th, 16th, and Kansas) will have 4-hour meters. The combination of these two controls will stimulate turnover and should allow anyone visiting the area to find a parking place more easily.

 SFMTA has strict laws about parking, e.g., how far away from your first four-hour spot do you need to park? (Answer: 500 feet) Here are links to information on parking legally in San Francisco and rules about parking meters. Be sure to read all signs before leaving your car!

 To further alleviate parking frustration, the college will be leasing, on a short-term basis, a portion of the Back Lot to a vendor who will manage and operate the parking. We are estimating about 70 spots, and we will be negotiating a discount rate for the CCA community. We are working to secure necessary permits and hope to have this in place in the fall. Showplace Square/CCA Parking Management

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), working with businesses, institutions, neighbors, and other community stakeholders, developed a set of measures to better manage on-street parking in the Showplace Square/California College of the Arts area. At its April 5, 2016 meeting, the SFMTA Board of Directors approved these parking management measures, and implementation work is now getting underway.

SFMTA's Field Operations team has begun surveying parking space markings and parking meter post placement. Installation of time limit signs and meter posts will begin soon. The bulk of the implementation work is scheduled for completion by the end of June, with a few locations requiring further site preparation, or completion of sidewalk construction (as in the case of the Potrero 1010 project and the One Henry Adams project).

SFMTA recognizes that these new parking management measures will likely increase parking pressures on nearby unregulated streets, and they are moving forward to develop and implement appropriate parking management measures for the blocks south of 16th Street and north of Hooper Street.

Invitae Corp Leases McClintock Building

The former headquarters for apparel company Jessica McClintock Inc., a 1938 art-deco building at 16th and De Haro (just a stone's throw from CCA's San Francisco campus) has been leased by Invitae Corp., a genetics testing company.  

Invitae, which has about 280 employees, will use the ground-floor for conducting its tests and the second floor for offices. The move-in date hasn't been set yet, but most likely late summer/fall 2016.

Public Hearing about Parking around SF Campus on March 4

Everyone knows that parking around the San Francisco campus can be a nightmare. Find out what's being proposed for parking management in the neighborhood at a public hearing on March 4. Below is the text of an announcement from the SFMTA.

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) has been working with businesses, institutions, neighbors, and other stakeholders on measures to better manage on-street parking in the Showplace Square / California College of the Arts area. We've developed and refined a set of proposals for parking management, and we're ready to move these proposals forward for public review, legislative action, and implementation.

McClintock Building Nearing Completion

Renovations to the McClintock Building at 1400 16th Street (corner of De Haro) are nearing completion. The sidewalks have been poured and street parking has opened up around the perimeter of the building.

Invitae Corporation, which specializes in genetic information and testing, has leased the space and is expected to move in this summer. Details of the lease were reported by the San Francisco Business Times.

Hooper Street: What Happened to the Storage Units?

Not that we miss them, but what happened to the storage units on the big lot at Hooper and 7th Streets?

The 3.3 acre property recently was recently purchased by Kilroy Realty Corp.

Kilroy will build a 400,000-square-foot, two-building campus that will include 320,000 square feet of office space and another 80,000 square feet of space dedicated to “production, distribution and repair,” or PDR. Construction will begin later this year.

In addition, Kilroy will donate a portion of the land to the nonprofit PlaceMade to provide affordable space for designers, inventors, manufacturers, and other related industrial users in San Francisco. PlaceMade, an affiliate of the group SFMade, will build a separate 56,000-square-foot building it will own and manage.

PlaceMade’s mission is to secure long-term affordable industrial space to support a vibrant manufacturing sector in San Francisco, in order to sustain companies producing locally-made products and thus create employment opportunities for a diverse local workforce.

Construction on Jessica McClintock Building

The former Jessica McClintock building at 16th and De Haro Streets in San Francisco has been sold and construction is under way. Pankow, the construction company that is working on the building, was kind enough to send us a notice about its work for the next three weeks. The text is below.

Here is a three-week (5/11 to 5/29) look ahead for exterior work and fencing at the McClintock Building, located at 1400 16th Street:

No exterior work, fencing, or "No Parking" signs on De Haro Street. We are using various sidewalk areas / parking spots on Carolina Street for all construction access, stockpiling, and off-haul of concrete and other debris. No work on 15th or 16th Streets.
