"Drought 1200" Performed on Back Lot

posted Nov 10, 2015, 4:45 PM by Chris Bliss   [ updated Nov 10, 2015, 4:45 PM by Jim Norrena ]

As part of the AICAD 2015 symposium, CCA professor Kim Anno directed students from her “California Drought” class along with professional dancers from the Naka Dance Company. Sound and music was provided by Kristina Dutton on violin, Kanoko Nishi Smith on koto, and Crystal Pascucci, on cello.

The performance was held on the Back Lot on November 7, 2015 and featured spectacular visual components and original music. This interdisciplinary performance evokes the startling statistics and disruptive reality when water becomes scarce in California.

Reduce waste by bringing unwanted and unused items to the center. Leave anything you think others might have use for. Take what you need for projects. Materials and items in the MRC are available to all.

Block Party Postponed

First the good news: it rained. The bad news: we had to cancel the Block Party. We do need the rain, but we were really looking forward to that costume contest!

Never fear. The Block Party will be held next spring. We don't have a date yet, but stay tuned!

We are excited to announce  the Back Lot on the San Francisco campus is officially open.

For the fall 2014 semester, the space is open for students, faculty, and staff from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Access to and from the space is through the back of the Nave only. (Emergency exits are positioned along the perimeter.)

What Can We Do Out There?

The Back Lot is designed to be a flexible, self-serve, shared outdoor space for the CCA community. There's a basketball court, picnic tables, Ping-Pong tables, and the student garden (FARM).

The space can also be used for drop-in academic uses, meetings, and social gatherings. The bright orange containers will be used for open-air workspace and storage.

Events that meet certain criteria must be scheduled. Review the complete list of Back Lot guidelines »

During the fall semester, event support for the Back Lot will be limited as we try out the space and better understand the operational needs and issues. New elements will be added as we go along.

Back Lot Guidelines

As with any of the college’s spaces and facilities, it’s expected that the community will take an active interest in maintaining the appearance of the Back Lot. Users should not leave behind trash and other materials and should be respectful of others with whom they are sharing the space.

Here’s what’s not allowed on the Back Lot:

  • alcohol
  • biking
  • pets
  • rollerblading
  • rollerskating
  • skateboarding
  • smoking

Back Lot 2.0

The Back Lot is a new and evolving space, and the plan is to add elements over time. This semester an advisory group made up of students, faculty, and staff will be monitoring the activity, talking to CCA community members, and making recommendations for future use.

CCA is hiring an outdoor make space resource manager to manage this exciting new space. Apply now »

We welcome your feedback at backlot@cca.edu.

Enjoy the new space!

The Containers Have Landed!

This week the Back Lot just got a whole lot more colorful with the arrival of several bright orange containers.

Work is currently underway to transform the space for use for the fall semester. Soon students, faculty, and staff will be able to take advantage of new facilities on the back lot including recreation space (outdoor eating area, basketball court, ping pong tables, and the student garden aka FARM), a bicycle kitchen, and drop-in space for academic use. These temporary uses of the back lot will allow us to experiment with the space as we develop a plan for the future.

Stay tuned for more info!

Under the Big Tent

CCA's Back Lot got its first trial run with graduation events in May. The first step was to erect the giant 80 x 130 foot tent.

On Friday night, May 16, more than 800 well-dressed attendees gathered for the Annual Fashion Show. The inside of the tent was reminiscent of New York's Fashion Week with tasteful white chairs arranged around a genuine 90-foot-long catwalk. Nineteen graduating Fashion Design students presented their collections to resounding applause.

The next day, the inside of the tent was transformed into a reception area for the post-commencement New Alumni Reception. New graduates and their families celebrated with champagne, food, and a festive photo booth. For the first time, we were able to provide some seating for families to gather, talk, and rest their tired feet.

Amazingly, the tent and all signs of the massive festivities had disappeared by Monday morning. Kudos to the CCA Facilities crew for making our first Back Lot events possible!

Smooth as a Baby's . . .

Ever since we purchased the empty lot adjacent to the San Francisco campus in 2011, we’ve been dreaming of the day when we could start using it.

Zoning and environmental issues have finally been resolved, the lot has been cleaned up, and the surface has been repai red and smoothed.

In the next few months we will focus on providing utilities (water, power, and lighting) and creating entrance and exit gates in order to have the lot ready for the Annual Fashion Show on May 16.

We are working with CCA Architecture faculty member Douglas Burnham on a temporary-use plan. Our goal is to provide spaces for studio work, recreation, events, and greenery beginning this fall.

Keep up on developments by visiting this blog regularly.
